During combat, have your gadgeteer use Lavalamp. The shape of the mouse should changed into the shape of staff. (The same staff for area effect spell like fireball or ice ball).

Just click on the location where you want to deploy. This effect should draw low level monsters like flies and as long as they are mesmerized by the lavalamp, they will ignore your party while you are busy sticking arrows and darts onto them.

I made the lava lamp last night, you can actually use it even if you're not in combat. Used it when I saw some red dots on my "radar" and waited for them to approach. And some of them walked right up to the "Psionic lure" (or whatever the name is). Level 12 Savant orb was attracted to it. Not testet it out to much.

It's not just low-level monsters that are attracted to it. A lot depends on the power level the lamp uses -- at power levels six and seven I've had things like Rapax warmages and samurais that were affected by it and brother did it ever save my life in Rapax Castle!
It's really just creatures with really high mental resistance that I found it to be totally useless against.
