I've been looking into it for some time now and i can't decide if i should get one or not.

Do you really have to put loads of time into it? I don't have too much spare time.

If i do get one which one would be the best? I've played Warcraft and Runescape but what others would be good to try?

And, is it confusing? Or hard? Do people kill you for no reason?

Well, RS is a game where you CAN put alot of time into... but you don't have to...
RS can be fun anyway.

Another MMO I can recomend is AO... I don't think you have to put alot of time in AO (anarchy online)

(I'm a little bit drunk while writing this post >_< examen ftw!! )

A good starter for MMOG is Guild wars as you buy the game and their is no monthy fee. their are 20 levels and heaps of skills to use so you don't need to invest to much time or effort into getting your character ready for action.

All outside areas are instanced so people can't PK you or steal your loot.

As bubbe said, Anarchy Online wouldn't be a bad choice, as it's free and quite popular still, though its a very dated engine and Guildwars and World of Warcraft are light years ahead of it.

Then there is the choice between Guild Wars and World of Warcraft, if I tell you which you should choose, others will argue, so the two advantages and disadvantages in my opinion of each are:

Guild Wars
*Advantages
-No monthly fee
-Decent visuals
*Disadvantages
-Limited actions
-Group size limit

World of Warcraft
*Advantages
-Huge world/plenty to do
-Huge replay value
*Disadvantages
-Monthly fee
-Plenty of immature players on some servers

So it's really up to you, I would pick one of the two I just described, both are good games and are enjoyable regardless of how much time you put in, but unfortunantly, despite what the designers say, if you do want to do REALLY well in any MMOG then you need to put alot of time in.

Being a long time EVE Online player I can strongly recommend that.

EVE however is a very harsh universe and you will indeed get killed for no good reason (or so it may seem at times).

It is also among the harder MMOs and has a pretty steep learning curve.

I would say Definately get into an MMORPG. I canyt really describe the awesome feeling i had playing wow for the first time, level 1-50 was just the best MMO experience i've had.
WoW is definately a casual friendly starting point which soon turns into an addiction. Once you've properly got into an MMORPG other games will just seem boring

WoW is really good. Very immersive at first. Very frustrating and gratifying at the same time in the long run.

I wouldn't recommend AO. Me and a friend got it the very first day it came out, then after 2 weeks got sick of it, as far as mmorpg go it's pretty bad.

Thinking that maybe it was just because the game was new, we tried it a year or so later, it still sucked.

There are many more advantages and disadvantages with WoW and Gw. For example, in Guild Wars you are the hero and the story is about you, in WoW you're just a random unimportant guy as far as the story goes. Actually, there is no story in wow, just static stuff you interact with, while in Guild Wars there is a plot and you end up saving the world.

But it's true that WoW is bigger as opposed to GW. WoW is very fun at first, but looking back, I wouldn't call it a game. Here's what you'ee going to do in it:

-Gring to level 40, farm non-stop to get your mount
-Gring to 60, possible farm non-stop to the the expensive mount
-Take appointments to raids and organize your life around the game, I hope you didn't have anything to to those friday nights, from now on you're standing around for 6 hours in a dungeon. You don't want to show up? No choice if you want a turn at the loot.
-You just invested 500 hours raiding that dungeon? Congratulation, you're tier 1. Now restart it all again for tier 2 items. You got them? Grats! Guess what? Tier 3 items are getting introduced next patch. Oh! And Tier 4 items are coming in the xp pack! Forget about skipping a Tier, you can't survive without the items of lower tier. Grats! you just wasted 2000 hours of your life, you now have 3 days every weeks dedicated to your raids, and you have no more friends.

What is it? You don't think raids sounds like fun? There's 3 things to do at level 60, raids, farm reputation, or pvp.

How do you farm reputation? Easy:
-Compete with others players all in the same zone to kill the same monsters thousands of tmes to raise your reputation so that you can get items.

What? It doesn't sound fun? Ok, there's PVP left. This is easier. 5 hours before you want to do some pvp, you get in a queue. 5 hours later, you finally get in a battleground. You're going to be with 10-15 guys you don't know, you kill ennemies, you get reputation, you play from 5 to 30 mins and either win or lose. You get some more reputation. You want to gain ranks in pvp and get cool items? You have to compete against players of your alliance and kill more than they do, every day, to raise in rank. Once you've gained ranks, you need to keep at it to maintain your rank.

And I guess you can also farm for cash. This is the same thing as farming for reputation, but instead you kill the same monsters thousands of times for gold instead of reputation.

But don't worry, level 1-30 are really fun to do. 30-40 you're going to be rushing to get your mount. 40-45 You're going to be a little too low level for your zones, and you're going to be burned out from rushing to 40. 45-50 is fun. 50-55 is probably the worse level range. In 55-60 you're going to be eagerly waiting for level 60, no 60 will take you in groups, but it's just 5 more level before you reach level 60 wonderland.

You're 60 now! Congrats! Now scroll up the page and start Farming/Raiding/PVPing. Have fun!

It's not just WoW, there are plenty of mmorpgs that substitute real contents with raids and farming. It doesn't take much work to create one new dungeon and a dozen of items, but they make sure it's going to take you a minimum of 300 hours and a big guild to get them. Then the next items and so on. It's a lot easier to maike players kill the same monsters all the time for reputation than add new quests and zones, or an actual goal for people at the level cap.

WOW is a lot of farming.

But, it's cool too. What Luvian didn't tell you was that while doing those long raids, you are also doing 8 or more very cool, very different, very interesting, and quite difficult boss fights.

I mean, if you don't like strategy and cooperation and tactics and pre-planning, then of course a MMO raid isn't for you.

Now, add into this that, for instance, during what luvian would consider my waste of a Friday night raiding tonight, I'm going to:
- go out first if I like
- begin the raid at 10pm
- drink an incredibly unhealthy amount of alcohol
- laugh my ass off in a 40-man voice chat with 39 other people who are all doing the same and
- if I'm lucky, take home phat lewt that feels like Christmas, and finally
- crash out at 3 or 4 am after video gaming all night, which is what I'd do anyway.

Now, as for the "5 hour queue" for PVP, there's a simple solution. It's called the Horde. Try a 5 minute queue. And if you can't get in a PVP Battleground, go attack another faction's village, and PVP will come running to you.

If you don't like farming, which I don't, then don't do it. I have like ZERO reputation with many of the factions, and the only good reputation I do have comes from simply doing dungeons and raids that beget reputaion for certain factions, and I would do those dungeons and raids anyway.

Don't like farming money, solutions abound. First off, doing dungeons begets money, raids tend to eat your money (consumables). Trade skills can make you money. I've sold countless bags that I just sew up, and the income's pretty good. Items I can't use I will sell or disenchant and sell the reagents. And if you really can't be bothered, then just buy gold -- sites abound and Blizzard doesn't really give 2 farts about it, from what I understand. Employ the chinese to farm video games for us rather than make crappy Wal-Mart DVD players.

I have played WOW for about 8 months now, and there are places I still haven't seen and things I still haven't done. Sure, I do the same dungeons over and over, but so what? I like them. Just like I play any video game over and over.

You must play WoW at least once. You can become bitter with it over time but then repetition can do this with you. I won't lie, it is a grind. But it never feels like a grind the first time 'round because there is a sense of wonder about everything in the world and how well it all fits together. Of course once you've done it already it can jade you if you replay again and again.

As for pvp, horde is the way to go. I feel sorry for anyone who works up a decent rank on alliance. I did this once and the agony of it scarred me for life (as an example, if I am waiting at a bus-stop or something IRL, I do things like run around in circles, hold up signs that say "AFK" and challenge random people to duels without saying a word to them beforehand). Horde is instant games usually, and even though they say horde have to play more games to achieve, it is far FAR better to be doing something rather than moving your character every 5 (yes, 5) minutes as you slowly go insane.

Guild Wars is totally free on the other hand. No pay to play fees - ever. I play both WoW and GW. GW is not as large and overwhelming as WOW is and I personally don't think it is as "magical". But GW doesn't take the commitment and time investment WoW does in order to be a viable player in the game. And GW is laden with more punks (although if you have some mates on here or elsewhere to team with it's not a problem).

Bah, I am in between I guess. I like both and they almost equal each other as far as pros and cons go. Guess all I can do is share my opinion on the two.
