To all:

I'm thinking of reading some Salvatore, seeing as how I hear so much about his work. I am planning on starting with the Icewind Dale Trilogy. Any other suggestions? Any favorites? Thanks...

this thread has some good recomendations, and I'd like to recommend that you avoid anything by Ed Greenwood like the plague. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/cg...;f=11;t=000700

Actually, I think you should start with the Dark Elf Trilogy, and read the Icewind Dale books after that.

I like the way R.A.'s writing of Drizzt evolves from Icewind Dale to Dark Elf, and think they should be read in the order they were written in, IWD trilogy, and then dark elf and legacy, but if you want to read them in the cronology of the FR (as far as the Drizzt books are concerned) start with Realms of Magic (it contains a short story about Guenhwyvar, then read dark elf trilogy, IWD trilogy, and then the others.

For you trivia buffs out there, IIRC this was the absolute first Forgotten Realms Trilogy, which I read when the old boxed set was still new on store shelves. I remember liking it okay at about age 11. Dunno about now.

No, the Moonshea Trilogy was written by Douglas Niles. It is also one of my FR favorites.

to quote memnoch from the HADB forum on the topic of Ed Greenwood:

Quote:
Now what book to shred next? Ahh, Spellfire. A literary masterpiece...in comedy. A book about adventure? Try Sweet Valley High maybe. Shandril and her doofus boyfriend spend practically the ENTIRE novel drooling over each other and blasting every manner of powerful creature imaginable, including the most powerful dracolich that ever lived, a few Level 18 mages, baatezu, dragons, you name it, she can cook it. She is the ultimate ubermunchkin - isn't Spellfire just the equivalent of a +100 Vorpal-Slay-Anything-That-Moves-Blade?

And moving on to the sequel "Crown of Fire" (Mystra help us if he ever comes up with a trilogy!) there's the obligatory nude scene featuring Storm and Elminster (ever notice how all these sex scenes involve Elminster?) what is the point of that? I quote: "Clothing floated through the air in his direction; more than once Storm smiled her thanks at him. When she was done, he merely said, 'Ye still look magnificent lass.'""

C'mon! Elminster's not a dirty old man. Is he?? Of course when they lie together Storm is unclad while El is not. Of course! I had these wet dreams about chicks when I was 13, but I got over it! I'm not even going to mention how often Shandril walks around naked for NO REASON AT ALL. In fact she even sits on a Lord of Waterdeep's head naked! I'd long ago given up trying to understand how certain events described linked back to the plot, so I won't even make an attempt to make a connection here. All I will say is that if I was looking for nudity I'd buy a Penthouse magazine - it has pictures!!

Finally, I will never forgive him for describing the Coronal as snoring in Elminster in Myth Drannor. Snoring? Snoring!! Elves don't sleep, they go into reverie!!!!!!!!!
I haven't read the books mentioned so i cannot add my own opinion, but from what I have read of his he sucks donkey...

The Icewind dale Trilogy is the way I started. Reading the Dark Elf Trilogy first is not that important although if you want to do it in the right order it is probaly the way to go. But there is nothing wrong with revisiting the past.
