I have played most of the recent games and I have to agree that 3rd person perspective works best for CRPGs just as 1st person perspective works best for 3D shooters.
Indeed some games do look good in 1st person prespective (Morrowind) but the game just doesn't play right. On ther other hand, a good 3rd person perspective game like Gothic (for example) has one of the best gaming enviroments and as well the "feel" of a CRPG.

I really can't get into the first person view games. Call it a lack of spatial insight if you wish, but you're missing a large portion of the overview. And of course, in real life you're also seeing things through the first person perspective , but that's... different. In real life there's some sort of thing called instinct, the guts feeling someone is standing behind you or something is going on there. A feeling which cannot be translated into a game, unfortunately. Or when you hear a sound behind you, it's much easier to pinpoint where it's coming from than when that sound is coming from your computer speakers.
Add to that the fact that the game controls for first person shooters are often more complex than for the 3rd person angles like in NWN; in result, I'm often very disoriented when playing fps-games, while I have no problems whatsoever with practically every other game perspective. The 45 degrees angle from a distance compensates for the lack of "guts feeling" and a large portion of the guidance and orientation you're missing when you're playing first person shooters. I also agree with Ronn that FPS is a good use of first person. For controlling groups, I think the BG engine rocks out. Above all, I cannot stand the view on NWN. |
PS:T is Planescape: Torment, probably the best game made by Bioware/Black Isle. It's very different from BG and IWD as the atmosphere is a lot darker, the situations weirder and more absurd and the story many many times better than was the case in the BG series, for instance. It's probably available for a very nice price in your local CD-ROM store, give it a try. You won't be disappointed. If you prefer a good storyline over hack 'n slash, that is.
Planescape:Torment. Another IE game that has a smaller following than the BG series and IWD, but that has a good reputation for having the best storyline of all the IE games. Or did you mean somehitng else?

TL, if you're interested you can pick up PS:T for as low as $5 used or $14.99 new at Amazon. That list has several of them offered at various prices within that range.
Definately story oriented. I got to Chapter 3 before I ever did much fighting...lol.

I don't really have a preference it just has to be a good game.
Theif I & II; W&W, M&M6-8: 1st person BGI&II, IWD: 3rd person These are all great games the point of view doesn't matter to much. |
