Serious question. We can agree that the 1st world are the westernised democracies and I think we all know what we mean when we talk about a 3rd world country but I've never been clear about the 2nd world.

Any thoughts?

I always thought that the 2nd world were the old Warsaw Pact countries.

I don't think these groupings are used anymore - You have FDC (Fully Developed Countries), LDC (Least Developed Countries) and something else in between.

Very likely Rikard, I wondered if Japan was a First World country. When I get a question like this in my head it won't go away without an answer.

BTW - you've contradicted yourself, in your previous post you said First World isn't used any more but you've just reminded me that you used it yesterday

Virtually all of Eastern Europe was the Warsaw Pact. The Warsaw Pact was more of a military organization than a political one - it was basically the Soviet satellite states that acted as a buffer between the USSR and NATO. Other Communist nations that were not part of the Warsaw Pact were Cuba and some of the Marxist regimes in Africa.

Thinking about it now, I'm not sure if the 2nd World included China or not...I have a feeling that they (the economists that came up with this stuff) were thinking more of state-based industrial communist economies at the time - China would have been an agricultural-based economy back in the late 40s and early 50s.

I could be wrong though, it's been 10 years since I studied this.
