I finished the Umar Hills quest and in the process made a near fatal mistake: I swapped Korgan for Valleygirl. Yeah, I know, HE(?) spells his name differently but I believe this spelling is more to the point. I was so used to that evil little axe wielder (well armoured and swinging Stonefire) taking care of business that with Valleygirl in the lineup I had to reload a half dozen times. As soon as I get back to Athkalta, I'm heading straight to the Copper Coronet, sobering the vicious little dwarf up and sending the girlie-man on his way (if I don't kill him for the Coweled Wizards - sucks being inclined toward good...).

Now that I've vented, there are some issues/spoilers I want settled from this part. Was it me or a bug? I never found the third circlet piece but was still able to get the symbol of Amaunator by answering the worship questions. I thought I needed all three for something. Also, what was that statue with the cool sling waiting for me to put in its arms? Finally, I found one bit of someone's (I forget the name) journal that alluded to something in a column of stone surrounded by a "copse of trees" somewhere to the south of something. What's up with this? Is it important (EXP-wise)?

Just out of curiosity, in terms of experience points, why is picking a lock (1750) worth more than killing a troll? Did anyone else find the Shadow Lord a lot easier to deal with than those damned liches? Who took on the Shadow Dragon and won (without cheating) and how'd you do it?

I too couldn't find the alleged column of stone, and I dragged the mouse over every bit of stone in that area, and still no joy. Was I looking in the right place and is it valuable?

The column of stone only exists as part of a Ranger Stronghold quest. As for the circle pieces, there is a room with a Shadow who asks you to accompany him. If you pass your mouse over one of the corners of the room, you'll find a stash with a circle piece in it

I got the piece from the Shadow in the room next to the statue, that gave me two. The first piece I picked up was in a room with a lich and some Skeleton Warriors (I think). Where's the third?

Also, I've been looking over a few other posts. Am I wrong about Valygar?

"Just out of curiosity, in terms of experience points, why is picking a lock (1750) worth more than killing a troll?"

I dunno but I'm glad you get exp from stuff like that.

"Did anyone else find the Shadow Lord a lot easier to deal with than those damned liches?"

Not really. For me anyway...

"Who took on the Shadow Dragon and won (without cheating) and how'd you do it?"

I did. I turned the difficulty down to the easiest .

There is one really cheap way of killing dragons that I don't recommend, but can be used if all other ideas fail. Use the wand of cloudkill about 15 times when you are out of sight of the dragon. Use it quickly because most dragons can cast heal.

Alternatively, I suppose I could send that whiney little Aerie girl in with a regular staff and see if she can annoy the dragon to death... LOL

Answering the questions about the rituals gave me the third piece. The three pieces then disappeared and were replaced by the whole symbol.
The Shadow Lord was easy for my 12th level characters.

I killed the Shadow dragon by surrounding him with 16 of Yoshi's traps, placed inside the dragon's circle. As soon as he turns hostile - boom! For a thief I don't consider that cheating, my paladin might, but he had his back turned.

I was fairly high level when I killed the dragon (16 or so), but here is what I did. I had the wardstone, so I had Jaheira summon a fire elemental. He killed this with a death spell, but did not go hostile. So I attacked him and Edwin (best mage in the game, let no one tell you otherwise) let loose with a spell sequencer of 1 Greater Malison and 2 Ice Storms. Everyone was hitting him, casting lots of Magic Missiles and then Aerie and jaheira cast Doom on him, lowering his saves even further. Edwin finished the job with a Finger of Death.

He has the Crom Faeyr scroll, that alone makes killing him worth it. (and a little XP, too, but you know, who needs that?)
