when to get Imoen

First time through SoA and ToB. I have not finished all the quests in and around Athkatla, but I am able to go to Spellhold. Should I get Imoen ASAP so she can join the party and gain EXP with the remaining quests, or do I need to "bulk up" as much as possible to free her?

It depends what Level your party is at. I personally would recomend doing all the quests, but you can go early and stand a chancde if ur at a high enough level.

I've played it through several times, from both sides. Here are my thoughts:

If you're not planning to add Imoen to your party when you find her, it really doesn't matter what level she is. In that case, do all the chapter 2 quests first.

If you want to add her to your party, it's best to leave early, so she can gain levels doing a lot of those chapter 2 quests when you all return, later. In that guess, I suggest doing the fighter stronghold, and the Unseeing Eye Cult, at the very least. The former gives you plenty of useful ammunition, while the latter provides the Shield of Harmony, if I recall correctly. I'd also suggest buying the Shield of Balduran before you even do the Unseeing Eye. You may want to sell and buy back a couple of those wands you've acquired, too, so they're completely charged up.

If you do just a few chapter 2 quests, you may want to avoid the Mind Flayer quest when you're offered a choice of three quests in the drow city, later. It has substantial rewards, but also requires the best equipment and experience from your party.
