The spider thing is pretty nasty, but consider that we breathe in/ swallow thousands of dustmites every day.
The explanation I heard for saying "Bless you" was that in medieval times when people thought that all illness was caused by bad spirits, a sneeze would eject said spirit and saying "God bless you" protected you from having it re-enter.
