Nope. One of the "downfalls" of the game...NPC's never recognize when you've finished a major quest. To be crude, it's like peeing in a dark pair of pants...gives you a warm feeling, but nobody notices much.

No, you can't really tell him what happened to his father. However, you can reunite him with his father... he will be immensely grateful and he will "give" you a magnificient bow should you succeed.
