simple question...how do I know if I have a T1 or T2 lan connection? here is a copy of a test I have ran on it
Download Size 402 KB

Download Time 3766 ms
Receive Buffer Not available
Transmission Speed 896 Kb/s
so how can I find out? or if I am even looking at the right ones, ther are so many speed types I have no clue which one I have
(name change edit)

T1 speed is defined as 1.544 mbps. T2 is something above that... okay, 6.312 mbps according to my networking book. I'm unaware of any commercial T2 providers, so you most likely don't have that. What you probably have is part of a T1 (also referred to as fractional T1); your transmission speed is listed as 896 kbps.

Now, 896 kbps is pretty hefty, at least in my book. 'Course, I don't live in a high-tech mecca, so the 250-400 kbps that we typically get around here may be less than what you're seeing.

So I'd place my bets on a fractional T1 at roughly 896 kbps. But the real answer... when you download something of a decent size, what is the speed that the download shows?

*edit* Forgot to mention that dial-up maxes out at 53.6 kbps and ISDN is around 117 kbps (note the "k", not "m"). So a T1 is roughly 30 times faster than dial-up, and roughly 15 times faster than ISDN. */edit*

Well, I doubt you have a T1 or even a fractal T1 as they are very expensive leased lines from the Phone Co.

You probably have either cable service which can top out at 3 Mb/s depending on network loading, or DSL which has a guaranteed data rate from you to the provider. You pay for varying DSL speeds up to 1.5 Mb/s.
