Thanks for the comments, people. It seems like you all think negatively about this, not that I'm surprised or anything

I have one question, still: Is waterpipe supposed to be less damaging than regular tobacco, because it has water, which supposedly makes the smoke unharmful? I'm not asking because I want to be using it, I'm asking because of curiosity concerning the lives of the people I know.

When I tried waterpipe, I asked my friend lots of questions, one of them being "Are you addicted?"

The answer was "Sure, why not, It's not unhealthy anyway"

a waterpipe is moreharmful, because the smoke concentrates in it. sorry to say it is worse, but I know alot of people who got sicker from a waterpipe than a normal one

Wow, that is a very interesting answer. If it's even *more* harmful than regular smoke, then I'll be sure to not try it again

Okay, that's news. I understood that by using a water pipe you filter the smoke, take out the solid material (ash?) and some other stuff.

Stormy, have you got some more info on this, I'm intrigued.

*disclaimer* I'm only intrigued by the phenomenon, I'm not going to start any (more) bad habits.

I'll note that I did not say I'm against trying different things. Telling someone not to do something because it's bad is something a parent does to a child, and after a certain age, the "child" is a child no longer, and doesn't respond well when this happens.

Rather, I offered advice based on my experiences. I suggested you look toward where you want to be in the future, and decide if these things will help you or hurt you in getting there. I believe in free choice, as long as those who choose remain responsible for their choices and their consequences.

And folks, the comments above are not a knock on anyone else who responded or anything like that. It's a personal challenge I face -- I'm more comfortable being the "heavy", so I watch myself carefully for signs that I'm doing it. No offense intended or implied to anyone else.

On another note, a brief Google search on waterpipes turned up the following snippet:

Quote:

Waterpipe smoking is increasing rapidly among both men and women in the region. While the common belief is that waterpipe smoking is less harmful than cigarette smoking, there is little data on its health and addictive effects. "There hasn't been much study done in that area, but all available evidence suggests that waterpipe smoking, like cigarettes, has many bad health effects," Ward said.

[/QUOTE]it has been answered, I do not have proof of it, but I know what I know about people who use it, they get sicker faster, lol
