You can't really compare the three, but:

The gamecube is the most console-like of them all, well suited for games of any type. It's backed up by Nintendo, and they make a lot of good games. It will be the console with the most childer-orientated games, and it's also going to be the cheapest.

The PS2 already has a history, it had a good number of bad games in the past, but the quality is now improving greatly. The price is going down because it has been around for a while.

The X-BOX will be the most expensive, more expensive even than the PS2. But this too will drop once it has been around a while. The quality of the X-BOX' internals is higher than the other consoles, and there's no eed to buy extra components for upgrades like there is with the PS2. The X-BOX has some great games and looks to me as though it is the most promising of the three, with the longest life expectancy and the higher game quality. Just wait a while before buying one, as it DOES seem to be expensive and the prices WILL drop soon.

Ultimately it's your choice. Go for a machine which has already proven itself, one of which it is proven the company can make great games, or one which looks to be the most powerful.

They all have must-have games, but if it were up to me I'd go for the X-Box (though they can keep the BTVS game)

Though I've not used either a Gamecube or an X-Box I can vouch for the quality of the PS2. It has a deepening variety of games, some very strong titles either already here or on the way (read GT3 and FFX), and it looks really cool stood upright next to your TV.

Seriously, the computer games industry has proven itself to be a very mutable thing over the past few years. Why, when I was a young 'un, all we talked about were Sega and Nintendo, and look at where those two companies are now...

Right now, the PS2 is fun, bouncy, has a DVD player and generally kicks ass. As for what's going to happen to it... who can say?

Personally, I'd get PS2 just for the FF franchise, but that's just me.

Here's my two cents. I'm in the same situation you're in Lavithander, except for me X-box is automatically out of the contest. I'm an American, I like the U.S. I live in the U.S. But like Istaron said Americans aren't really that good at making console games. Besides a lot of X-box games can be found for the computer already.

If you're into more mature games you may want to go with the PS2. It's unlikely that you'll get games like MGS2 on Gamecube, and Nintendo rarely releases any games above E (I think that's what it's called.) rating, although the companies that are working for Nintendo definitely will. Oh and if you're into FF, then you may also want to get a PS2 just for that. I doubt Square and Nintendo will patch things up any time soon, but it is a possibility. (This is the main reason why PS2 may win out this Christmas. I love Square!)

There are some good things about the Gamecube. First off it's the cheapest of the systems. The graphics aren't bad at all, and you don't have to buy a multitap, one of the annoying accessories you have to buy for the PS2. There are some good games on it, despite what people have said here. Super Smash Brothers Melee, PSO (Phantasy Star Online), Mario Sunshine, and Metroid Prime like very nice.

So it's still up to you. I hope I helped.

I got my son a PS2 for Christmas. When he spends the night at my parents, I "test" it to make sure it's in perfect working order. So far no problems...lol.

XBOX!!!!! The graphics are way better and the games will come. It's got Microsoft backing it for crying out loud. PS2 is very dated and the games aren't all that great.

Gosh man, I would LOVE to own either a Playstation 2 or a X-Box.. But we are broke bad now with mom sick and all. isn't going to be a really 'normal' christmas here, I just hope Mom makes it to Christmas.. Were still putting the tree up and decorations.. will love sleeping under the tree

If I was to choose, I would get... hmm hard choice between the Xbox or PS2.. DON'T buy a Gamecube.. junk.. Nintendo is dead.

Here are the differences:

PS2 - Pretty good tech, and TONS of games. DVD player, plays older PS1 games.

XBOX - Few games, DVD player(I THINK....?) better tech/anti-aliasing and has a larger dev backing with companies (Big names).

I'd get a XBOX I think.. hell, I'd take either one really!
