My wife and I watched this last night. I must say I can't remember a movie ever being so real. There were so many times in the movie when I thought, that's exactly what a person would do in that situation.
It was an amazing piece of work. Everyone's acting was excellent. Rene went to a new level for me with her performance.
Donald Sutherland just makes me laugh. You sit down to watch a movie and there he is. He's just great!

I watched the movie and basically enjoyed it... but didn't think it lived up to the gushingly positive press it got.

IMO it had predictable and stereotypic characters, excessively melodramatic plot... it portrayed an unrealistic and almost "Gone with the Wind"'ian vision of the South and North after the war (I call it the Romantic Revisionism of the South).

On the other hand, I understand why it was so popular... the cinematography was excellent, it was a beautiful movie to watch. There was some great character acting, and some wonderfully executed vignette's (the goat farmer scene I especially enjoyed).

I agree. I liked it for slightly different reasons and normal. I also had "not" heard a single thing about it, which was a good thing.

I believe I have seen this movie quite some time ago. I remember liking it alot. I think my only complaint was I found it a bit long. But nothing to really complain about still an excellent movie if you have the time.
