Just starting out and my rogue keeps getting slaughtered. Who and where is the best henchman to hire (other than the rogue inside the Halls of Justice?) I would really like to live long enough to get to the docks without having to hunt up some cheat codes. Or perhaps there are easier quests on which to start?

Go to the Trade of Blades - that is where the rest of the henchmen are. If you're evil take Grimgnaw the monk - otherwise take Daelan Red Tiger. Both are excelent front fighters
The easiest area to start with is the Peninsula - the Docks is the hardest.

It's Grimgnaw all the way.

I would have to say either Daelan or Grimnaw. Daelan has a knockdown feat which is quite usefull at higher levels. Grimnaw is more like a pint sized siege engine. His attacks also do elemental damage for breaking into imposible to open chests.

Grimjaw is the best killer in the bunch. But I'd take Linu for her undead turning, good offensive spells (I've seen her do over 250 points in one cast to one target), buff-up spells and superb healing abilities.

Late in the game, Linu gets some nice spells, including Harm, which takes an enemy down to 1-4 hps. Early on, go with one of the main melee guys, Daelan or Grimgnaw. Also, use stealth and ranged attacks to get the jump on your enemies. You should be able to take out a few before they realize you're there, which will make fights easier.
