SEOUL, South Korea –– North Korea accused the United States on Saturday of trying to start a war against the communist state, and said it will respond to war with war.

Saturday's statement came after President Bush issued a fresh warning last week to Iraq and North Korea that there would be consequences if they produce weapons of mass destruction. Bush demanded that the North allow U.N. experts to inspect its suspected nuclear weapons program.

The North's Stalinist regime regularly issues strident, hardline statements against the United States.

Bush's demand reflected an "attempt to provoke a new war of aggression against the (North)," Minju Joson, a state-run North Korean newspaper, said in a commentary.

"The Korean people and the People's Army do not want war but are not afraid of it," it said. "Now that the U.S. makes desperate efforts to unleash a war of aggression against the Democratic People's Republic of (North) Korea, it is fully ready to react to the war with a war of justice."

The commentary was carried by the North's official foreign news outlet, KCNA, which was monitored in Seoul.

North Korea has escalated its anti-U.S. rhetoric after Washington deployed more fighter jets to South Korea last month to fill in for a U.S. aircraft carrier that left the region to support the American military campaign in Afghanistan.

The North has also ignored Bush's offer in June to open dialogue aimed at curbing North Korea's missile and nuclear programs and its massive deployment of troops near the border with South Korea.

The Korean peninsula was divided into the communist North and pro-Western South in 1945. The 1950-53 Korean War ended without a peace treaty, and the two sides are still technically at war.

Iraq had a huge army before the Gulf War. There were many naysayers who were predicting that Iraq eould give us a good fight and that we would need thosuands of bodybags.

Additionally, the last time I heard info on this, the South Koreans actually have a larger army than N. Korea.

I hardly want a war with N. Korea. But N.Korea does seem to act as an arsenal for any country that wants to oppose us.

Fair call. I'm just bummed that the situation is deteriorating. (Hence the )

I think the North will improve once the old dictator is gone.

Things were softening for a while. Talk of signing a peace treaty and all.

The frightening thing is that, if north korea declare war on USA (or the other way around), south korea will probarbly have to fight too..
And that would be disastrous!
Because the tension between North and south korea has dropped pretty much the last few years, and if something like this would happen, all the wrok that has been put into that, will be for nothing

There's a big difference between Iraq and N.Korea: China. The problem with N.Korea is that it's been allied with China since the communist took over the country. That alliance is the reason the US backed out or the Korean War in the early '50. Don't kid yourself, the US will demand all they want but they will back down because they cannot afford to fight a battle on two front (terrorism and China).

Mind you, I'm sure China would back down if the US are ready to recognize them as the rightfull leader of China and if they are ready to stop their backing of Taiwan!

Ryanamur, I doubt that Bush would push NKorea to the point of war. You're right, the USA most certainly wouldn't want a 2 front war.

You're not exactly correct about why the US backed out of the Korean War. It was less about the alliance between NK and China than it was about the alliance between China and the USSR at the time. The US didn't attack/bomb inside the Chinese border (i.e. across the Yalu (sp?) River) for fear that the USSR would attack Western Europe. Remember, General MacArthur got fired over this.

Yes, but let's not forget that the Chinese army was starting to mobilize on the Chinese border and was just about ready to come and assist their Communist camarads!

why is the usa allowed to produce weapons of mass destruction, and n-korea and iraq aren't ?

funny no american knows what communism is about but all are sure its bad. have ANY of you ever realized, that most Sci-Fi advanced alien species live in a communistic system.

i assure you sooner or later the world will be communistic - not the kind of would-be communism they tried in eastern europe and in the ussr, but communism at its true meaning as meant by lenin.
