Medical help needed!

I have this small problem:

Today at work I suddenly 'went blind' on one of my eyes. I was just working and minding my own business when my vision disappeared own my left eye, it was feeling a bit 'numb' and all I could see was flashing colours. It didn't hurt or anything and I wasn't feeling dizzy, just the colours. The 'blindness' disappeared after a few minutes.

I have had this happening to me a few times before, last time was a couple of weeks ago, and always on my left eye. It also appears to be connected to computers as as far as I can remember it only happens when I'm sitting in front of a computer or just afterwards ( today about 20-30 minutes after I left the computer.) The amount of time spent in front of the computer screen had been different each time, today I just sat for 20 minutes. Can it be connected to computers somehow?

I also have had contact lenses for about three years and I have never had any problem with those. I'm not going blind am I?

I would suggest seeing a doctor or an optomatrist. Because the last people I would be asking for advice are the people here

I'm sorry you had that happen, I BET it would be scary and disconcerting. Now what I am about to say is JUST one of 100's of things that could be wrong:

First, how old are you, if you don't mind. [img]smile.gif[/img] If over 45, it could be glaucoma, or Macular Degeneration. BTW, Are you tired a lot? Are you hot or thirsty lot? Get Headaches? or and drink sugar drinks? (Coke, ect) It could even be a small tumor (very rare!) pressing against your eye. (My sister said this happens). But most cases are not that bad, but this is something to treat very seriously. See a Doctor ASAP!!

My sister is an Eye Doctor, and you would be amazed at how many illnesses they can tell you have just by looking at your eye in a microscope--after injecting a dye.

The loss of vision in one eye could be due to many causes.
It could be due to lesion in the eye itself (outer segment as surperficial as cornea, or inner eye such as in the retina), the nerve (optic nerve), or the brain (although unlikely if the loss of vision is in one eye only).

Any loss of vision in one eye should be dealt with seriously. If the ophthalmologist thinks that there is no lesion or problem in the eye, I would suggest that you see a Neurologist with special interest in Neuroophthalmology.

Go an see that doctor NOW!!!!

Without being a doctor, I know that it COULD be related to too high pressure in the veines in your eye. Something that CAN lead to glaucoma, which again can lead to total blindness on that eye

It could be a lot of other things too. Some of them (I guess) harmless, others very dangerous for your eyes.

Pick up the phone and make an appointment with your doctor (before you ask for more advises here)

Actually temporary blindness is usually no cause for too much worry. But as shadowhound said go see you physician to be on the safe side. It's impoosible to diagnose over the net you know. AFAIK there is no absolute diagnosis for this. It could be caused by migraines, cortical edemas, insect bites etc. etc. So call your physician and make an appointment. [img]smile.gif[/img]

BTW I'm 22 years old, have been hot and thirsty lately ( due to the heatwave in Europe ), very rarely have headaches, don't drink much Coke or similar and I don't have diabetes. My parents have migraine once in a while but not often. Does this help any further?

22 is good. The only thing that will help, is getting yer butt to a Doctor. They can refer you to a specialist. YOU NEED TO DO THIS NOW. EYE problems not caught early can cause permanent blindness (in some cases scar tissue).

Well if you've been hot and thristy go drink some more water. It could be your blood pressure that's lowered some. Still, go see your physician. If you don't think you can get away from work talk to your boss and explain what has happened. I'm sure he will give you leave to go see a doctor. [img]smile.gif[/img]

Unfortunatly I can't away from work unless it's an emergency since everybody working there are needed. But I work at the hospital myself and it takes me about 1 min to go to the emergency ward.

I'll make an appointment with a physician ASAP.
