Just starting, I tend to notice my hunter goes like this : left click on target, click autoshot, shoot shoot shoot, stop shooting because the target is too near and have to resort to melee attack. If I run away few feet the target chases me down and still cannot shoot it. If I run away too far the target goes back and recoup it's lost hp.

Am I missing something here?

Sounds like you're missing a pet.

Sounds like your missing the point.

A hunter is not designed to just use ranged combat, it spends most/a lot of its time in it, but in the beginning you will be doing a lot of melee combat

Hunters below level 10 can live without a pet. At level 10 you do the quest and can tame your first pet. Using the pet skill Growl (bought from trainers) you can make your pet hold aggro while you shoot.

At lower levels it gets repetitive, until you have to keep out of melee ranged using traps/skills/talents.

If you need any help on Hunters just PM me - my main is now a level 51 Hunter and doing pretty well!

Traps, VASTLY different builds and the fact we get kickass pets all mean one thing: we are "teh" pwnage. This is as a completely unbiased 36 hunter on Suramar.

VASTLY different? Not after 1.8. Any hunter that wants to contend for a spot in ANY instance or PVP has to follow the MM->SV speccing, now that BM sucks. Traps now suck, as they have a chance to fail, and a high one at that, the pets can now only have 4 abilities, and our Burst DPS went down 11%. Yep, were "teh" pwnage.

Level 6 now, which skill is good for the hunter? Do I need to purchase every skill from the hunter teacher?

Yeah, go ahead and purchase all the skills. But ask for some help before you start speccing your talent trees.
