Ok, I don't want to spoil anything for anyone so if you haven't played Chapter
1 yet don't read this:............................................. ..... I was in the Goblin Warrens level 2 when I came upon some Hardened fire Trolls (the ones with Ilquog). My mage threw an Icelance spell on them and it said something along the lines of "Hardened Fire Troll immune to effects of Icelance spell". Why? I would think it would do extra damage wouldn't you? Kinda like when you dump a flask of burning oil on a Hardened Ice Troll. Can someone explain? |

Did Icelance still do damage? The spell has a stunning effect, which may be what the troll was immune to.

It did no damage nor did it stun them, which really suprised me. Would it have something to do with just those particular Fire Trolls, as in that particular clan (Kruntur's clan)?

those trolls are immune to stun. it is possible that a bug/glitch is causing them not to take damage as well. try a different cold spell. should work.

Yes, ZFR is right. Whenever a spell has an aftereffect that is active immidiately after the spell hits teh target, and the target is immune to that particular effect, the entire spell is negated. Also the case with Chromatic Obs, Geedle's Loop, any damage-dealing death spell and a few others.

To my knowledge, those Hardened Fire Trolls are immune to all single-target cold spells. I distinctly remember being pissed off at wasting an Ice Dagger on one of them and having an ineffective attack with one of those returning frost darts.
It sort of makes sense that a piercing, cold weapon wouldn't penetrate the hardened shell of a warm creature, but OTOH, the D&D universe usually runs on the theory that spells of opposing elements do extra damage. Go figure.

That's exactly what I was thinking, Aerich. Let me quote from a well known strategy guide on IWDII: "Fire trolls are similar to regular trolls, but their affinity to fire makes fire spells and flasks of oil useless against them. Fire trolls lack the regenerative properties of normal trolls. Cold based magic does additional damage to them. Attack them with a few cold spells and a warrioir or two." WRONG! It sould say: "We made these fire trolls to make you think that cold magic would do extra damage to them, but really we lied. We wanted to make you waste hours fighting them as you try 30 different combinations of cold based attacks. Meanwhile, they will slice through every party member one at a time like a flaming-hot knife to butter. Good luck figuring this one out! Oh and don't let it drive you crazy. Remember, have fun!" Um... I'm pretty sure I got a damage bonus for using ice on fire trolls and elementals...

THis is a 'Hardened' troll. So there may be two issues.
1. Icelance may not have worked because of the bug mentioned 2. Ice dagger may not have worked because, as the troll is hardened, it is immune to that sort of damage Just an idea... |

I've only noticed the cold immunity on the hardened fire trolls; now that I think about it, I seem to recall fire immunity on some ice creatures other than golem types - hardened ice trolls?
It's very possible that only "hard" creatures have the immunity to opposing elements - although it's dumb for the game not to give any hints before meeting the creatures.
