I sometimes have that problem. can't sleep forever thinking about something. but the thing is, I already have everything a guy can have ( got my papers, a nice job , wonderful * cough * friend , a guaranteed future etc ). but still the thought of missing something still forever lingering in my thoughts. I wonder why?

I think that because of the welfare of the 1st and 2nd world, we tend to be spoiled alot, especially those of us under 30 (this doesn't apply to everyone offcourse, I'm not pointing fingers or anything). We've had so much, growing up being able to do pretty much anything. All the freedom we have, I think we'll always hunger for more, one way or the other...

... and my wife wonders why I stay up until wee hours in the morning during weekends. I am glad to know that I am not alone.

Well partners and children are great to have but some people require something spiritual as well...

I can relate, especially because I just split with my VERY serious girlfriend.

but the thing that bothers me the most, is I have always had the feeling that I either need to or am destined to do something great. but what? and, being a teenager just out of high school, it seems as though I'm powerless to do whatever it is I need to do.

That feeling could just be an underlying desire to actually do something great, not necessarily a planned future for you. I know I get that feeling sometimes, but I look at myself and think "What could I posdsibly do that's great?"...the only real desire and amibition I have is to write a book and have it published...which is the only ambition I'm pursueing at the moment...

As far as career and love-life are concerned I've got a long way to go
