I installed the 1.41 patch and everytime I try to enter the Vale of Shadows, my game crashes and exits to the Desktop. Any idea on what I can do?

A quick question, Dundee:
Did you, by chance, happen to install Trials of the Luremaster prior to using the 1.41 patch for HOW? |

*LMAO* Fair enough, Dundee!
It's a common issue and so I thought I'd ask that question first. That not being the case I'll need to do a little research on this issue. Hopefully one of our other regular posters has seen this before and will offer some insight.

On the problem, what order did you install things in? I suspect you simply need to reinstall IWD, HOW and then the HOW version of the patch. ToL is definatly worth the download though.

I've found to my cost that if you monkey around with items, spells or anything, it can affect IWD far more than BG. If the install wasn't "clean", though there is often little to suggest why that might be so, HoW will not install properly. It will inform you as such. Off the top of my head I can't remember the exact problem HoW detects, but as soon as you try to access an area it falls over - straight to the desktop. You can't miss it if it doesn't install proprely. Take out the lot and start from scratch. That's what I had to do.

So I have to reinstall? Goody.
By the way, this was the order I installed, 1) IWD 2) HoW 3) HoW Patch |

Dundee,
The installation order is correct, so one of two things is happening: either one of the game files got corrupted during installation or the patch process, or one of your saved games got corrupted somehow. Try doing a complete re-installation including the patches (make sure your saved games are backed up first) and then replace your saved games. If you STILL get the area transition crash, try dropping a thread on the black isle troubleshooting forums for Rachel (one of the moderators). She can take a look at your saved game and determine if it is somehow corrupted and possibly repait the file. Hope that helps.

This is a peculiar process, but if you've modified any of your games in anyway, albeit change the armour class on a item or whatever it may be, this may upset IWD. Don't ask me why it's so sensitive, but it is. If so, make sure you delete all of the changes you may have made before you save your saved games. That way you have a "fresh" set of saves with which to save (again) and reinstall. It's a pain, I know, but it's best to do it and save multiple reinstalls later (which won't work trust me).
Use Dalekeeper for the easiest modifications. You knew that already, but you'd be amazed at the number of people that haven't changed anything on IWD, no matter how many times they've played! [ 09-28-2002, 07:13 PM: Message edited by: Lord Brass ]
