I just read in a paper that some wiseguys in Norway had done a poll on "the 100 best books of all time". While I normally pay no attention to this kind of things this onewas unusually stupid.... there was no mention of Tolkien... which is odd because I read that LotR was chosen the best book of the 20th century in 5 diffrent polls about 2 years ago...

I think perhaps you are wrong. Maybe a coincidence but recently in the norwegian newspapers(I`m from Norway) I read that 100 authors from all over the world had voted for the best book(s) ever. I think it was about 50 books listed and as you said LOTR was not mentioned. Btw no fantasy was. Don Quijote was voted as the BEST book ever! Think I gotta read it now.
