They're not obligatory, but are nice to have. They can be a challenge to develop correctly and play at lower levels, but they're fun and very effective at higher levels.

Monks require a lot of patience and dedication to bring up properly to where they actually become useful. In the early stages, they're almost dead weight. If this is your first time through the game, you might be better off with two tanks instead of a tank and a monk.

The real problem is that just as your monk is really hitting his stride, the game is over (in normal modes of play). So you'd have to take him on to HOF for to get the most out of him.
