Does it make a difference if you have ToB installed before you start a SoA game. Does anything in ToB have an effect on SoA such as characters, quests, etc. Thanks.

Well, you get higher levels and amazing abilities, but the only extra quest you get is Watcher's Keep... You won't find, for example, another quest-giver in the Copper Coronet or an NPC hanging out in the Umar Hills.

I recommend installing ToB from the very start. It adds features, fixes numerous bugs, and in the long run it will save you time. If you install SoA only, you will need to download Bioware's patch #xxx37 for SoA. If you install ToB on top of SoA, you will not need patch 37. Instead proceed directly to the final patch, #24698. This is the most stable version of the game with dozens of bugs fixed (just read the list of bugs fixed on Bioware's site). As for features, you will get access to the Wild Mage, and also the Tab button for container-highlighting (this is a feature I would not want to be without during SoA).
