Aah yes, that could well be his meaning.
It's the source of small irritation for me. A Scotsman, Welshman or Irishman in the USA would be known as a Scotsman, Welshman or Irishman respectively, never British. Put an Englishman in the USA and he's a Brit.....Dang...

Well, Charlie, I'm a Texan, but you might refer to me as a Yank or Yankee, even though we fought, (unsuccessfully) against the Yankees in the Civil War. Plus, I promise not to call you a Limey.

Where does "Yankee" come from? The term "Limey" is from using citrus fruit to ward off scurvy on long sea journeys. Did you know that?

I'd recognize and be able to describe the flags, though.
You're right. In 1800 the Act of Union united Ireland and Britain as a state called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. On December 6th 1921 a treaty was signed which made the south of Ireland a separate state called the Irish Free State but was still a part of the Commonwealth. The treaty caused a civil war in Ireland as many supported the treaty but many did not. The partition between north and south is one of the main causes of the troubles in Northern Ireland today. (getting a little off topic) The Irish flag (green, white and orange) is suppose to represent peace (white) between Catholics/Republicians (Green) and Protestants/Unionists (Orange). I could describe all the flags as well.

Nope, England is politically England, Scotland is politically Scotland etc. We are completely seperate countries. This is why we still have independent flags and seperate parliaments. We represent our shared interests to the outside world as the UK.
