The only thing I will say is going from IWD2 to BG1 is that the 'age' differance will annoy you. This was one of the first infinity engine games released and thus has alot of quirks. IWD2 was the most polished state I have ever seen the IE engine in. Really when I play BG1 little things annoy me, things they sorted through the course of IWD1, PT, BG2 and finally IWD2.

The worst thing I remember was being unable to pause the game during combat in BG1. That means alot of running away as your characters vainly attempt to achieve sufficient safe-distance to change weapons/armor.

Yes you can pause during combat in bg1, just like in all other infinity engine games....
Yes you can pause but the problem with BG1 was if you tried to access the character inventory it would unpause. So if you wanted to move a potion down to the quick item slot you would have to do it before battle started.

Yup, or even drink a potion from inven. I have fond memories of me frantically switching weapons only to return to the main screen with my character in pieces

In answer to the question I would go with BG1 with TotSC first than BG 2 after that.

You get to start at level 1 then export your character into BG 2. You can play it like one very long game.

In the FF series I played 1 and 7 through to completion. They were both good.

Oh, I think they both are much bigger than IWD2! Of course you don't have to do all the side quests in them, but still... Both are now available packed with their respective expansion packs as cheap releases - at least here in Finland.

I myself would get Planescape: Torment if you. If you find a copy that is. Very, very different from IWD2, with deep and personal story, but Interplay has lost it's rights to the game, and isn't allowed to sell it any longer, so any possible copies you see in stores are the last there is going to be. (It all has to do with Atari/Infogrames getting all D&D interactive rights when they purchased Hasbro Interactive)
