I'm trying to call my friend Christine who lives in Hamburg, she gave me what appears to be a mobile/cellphone number in Germany but I'm not sure how to dial it with the country/area codes etc. (I don't even know if it's a mobile number, actually). I know that the country code for Germany is 49 and the Hamburg area code is 40, her number (with the last 4 digits blocked out for privacy reasons) is 0179111xxxx. Does this mean that I dial (after dialling IDD 0011 here in OZ) 0011-4940179111xxxx?

Help from some of our German friends would be appreciated.

As cellphones are used nationwide you don't need the area code
So you have to dial

+49 or 0049 for germany
179 for her cellphone provider
and the rest of the number
= 0049-179-111xxxx

with your exit code 0011 (why do you have to dial this?)
this is

0011-49-179-111xxxx

That should work.

P.S.:
Almost forgot the obvious geography lesson. I am NOT from Germany but from Austria, which is the small country to the south of Germany. We are NOT a part of Germany as we were liberated by the Allied forces in 1945.
It's funny that some people overseas tend to forget the positive things their countries did fifty years ago while we are still struggling to forget the negative ones.

P.P.S:
Yes, Hitler was born in Austria (at the German border). But WE kicked him out.
Didn't know he would come back for us later. Hey, there are also nice fellas from my country. Mozart, Schrödinger, ...

Thank you...both for the advice and for the geography lesson. I actually thought Austria was a bit further down south...down near Antarctica. Wait, that's Australia.

Wow, such a highly eclectic understanding of history must be incredibly practical.

Hey unsere ganze Nation gründet sich darauf Euch Deutschen die Schuld am zweiten Weltkrieg zuzuschieben. Ein Grund für unsere vergleichsweise lächerliche Vergangenheitsbewältigung.
