Still no word from parents of unidentified toddler Bakersfield, CA, May 20 - Police said there's still no word from the parents of a 2-year-old boy found wandering in the streets alone on Sunday night. The little boy said his name is Mateo, but he isn't saying much more. On Tuesday, detectives took the toddler back to the northeast Bakersfield neighborhood where he was found in a desperate search for his parents. In Spanish, a detective asked the toddler to show him his house. But with a teddy bear tucked under his left arm, the toddler grabs the detective's hand and wanders down the street. "He speaks very little and he's not been able to tell us anything more than his name is Mateo," said Det. Mary DeGeare of the Bakersfield Police Department. "So at this point all we can do is take him out, maybe he'll recognize something or somebody will recognize him and call us with some information." A driver found Mateo wandering near Haley and Niles in northeast Bakersfield late Sunday night. Detectives said it's hard to tell whether he even recognizes the neighborhood. The little boy's picture has been posted all over the neighborhood. At Niles Drug Store, the picture is posted next to every register so that no one leaves the store without seeing it. "He's only two years old and you have to wonder what he's feeling," said manager Elizabeth Moreno. "Everybody's talking about it and we're all looking at the picture trying to recognize it and nobody seems to recognize this little boy." Police said they've received calls, but nothing's panned out. Until something does, little Mateo Doe will be in protective custody, playing, laughing and smiling with the innocence of a child his age. If you recognize Mateo you are urged to call police at 327-7111. Detectives said they are relying on the public to help reunite Mateo with his parents.

Maybe the parents abandoned him or something. A responsible parent would do anything he or she can to find their child.
