Back on topic, since Australia is a non-nuclear nation, wouldn't it be nice if they had a sheild and never had to worry about a nuclear attack? Why would nuclear nations develope more nuclear weapons to attack Australia?

Certainly not a balance of power issue there since they don't have nukes and aren't trying to get them.

Mutually Assured Non-Destruction would be the case for the Australians. You can't destroy them with nukes because you couldn't hit them, and they can't destroy you with nukes because they don't have them.

LOL - I had posted almost the same thing, but my computer froze when I hit the post button . Lucky I guess, because my "Two wrongs don't make a RIGHT" quip would have looked even sillier after Ronn's 3rd post .
LOL @ Davros!

I'm too unpredictable.

I would think that for Australia it's a very good thing.

It does seem strange that China would feel threatened by Australia's ability to protect itself doesn't it?

I think that is a very good thing for Austrailia. They do not have the mass destructive capabilities, but they are targets. I see nothing wrong with wanting to defend their people.

BTW, the Aussies have a very well equiped, very well trained, and very effective military.

And to those worried about the (very tenuous)balance of power that MAD provides being upset with a new arms race, the arms race is millenia old and will continue. The race has always been about arms and armor, and as long as either are needed, the race will continue - unfortunately.

On the other hand, should things ever go pear shaped, and someone decides they want to nuke the US (hey - nuking anyone is insane - i don't think it will happen). What do they do first? Well, any country outside of the US that harbours a missile-defense system becomes a target. After all, the first thing you have to do is knock out the shield.

That's the concern here in the UK (though it has lessened since 9/11). That should we become part of the USA's missile defense shield, we are putting ourselves on the front line to protect America. That's not a popular position.
