America is a village in the part of Germany that once was East Germany - and the title of a recent, fairly sucessful movie whose protagonists were raised in said village.

Your posting expressed many of my feelings concerning my country. Your words were very true and kindly put. Now I live in a neighborhood where on one side of me is a white family, the other side a black family. The same holds true across the street. We have our problems here. However, unlike so many other countries we work at correcting them. At times it cost us our own blood. There is a saying I have heard more and more as of late concerning American's views about each other. "We don't have love each other. We don't even have to like each other. But by what is holy we respect each other." Given this is from a group of people that came (and still do) from so many places to unite as country men under one flag is statment that not only says it all, but is yet to be made anywhere else in the world. I've always been amused that when a people were in trouble it was Amercia that stepped up to the pump with our monies. For example: Rebuilding Europe for starters. How many of those millions in yesterday's money has yet to be repaid? Now let a disaster like the hurricane that hit south Florida 10 years ago happen and tell me which country said to American...hey I got 5 or 10 million to help you rebuild. May we send over some supplies...anything? In a word no one offered! I read here where many believe we are bullies, that we look down upon the rest of the world. That Bush is the wrong man with wrong ideas. Well I believe given 9/11 Bush is the correct man who was and is in the correct place at the correct time. I don't agree with everything he has done. However, I do believe he is doing what he thinks is in the best interests of the United States. Yet he is blaspheme for that very action. He is blaspheme for carrying out the charge of his office. Sorry but he is the leader of the United States, and I'm personally glad his direction is putting the USA first. That is his job. Those who don't agree have said so. To them I have this to say: I'm one American of many Americans who is tired of seeing those who we gave so freely to bite at the hand that fed, clothed and rebuilt your countries. If you're not with us then step aside. You want the respect given to a peer then step up to the pump; cover the ground you stand on; start by re-paying what you owe us. Of course you might argue that the first two points here; however, we all know you will never re-pay the monies. However, I will bet a dollar to a dime that if your country gets into another bind I know who you will come asking help from. Do not that this posting as a flame...what it is, is one Amercian's frustration--expressed, Olds |

If it's not a flame, then you did one hell of a job disguising it.
Now how much do i owe you ?

A great country run by a bunch of war mongering, earth destroying, unthrustworthy, word breaking pricks... me thinks.

And by the way, the name "America" itself is a result from one of the biggest scams in history. When the German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller had to decide a name for the new continent that he quite literally put on the map, he coined the name "America" in the honour of Amerigo Vespucci - who in those days claimed to have beaten Columbus in the European race to North America. While in retrospective it's fairly certain that Vespucci lied, the name had already stuck in people's minds and was used for the entire continent in result. It's rather amusing that the name for half the world immortalizes a scam, though. [ 11-19-2003, 10:12 AM: Message edited by: Grojlach ] |

A discussion with MagiK on another forum led to him making a very good point about the USA to me. "Try to look at the USA as a collection of 52 very different countries".
It's a comment that has stuck with me and I find useful when trying to get my head round some of the quaint political ideals it has
