Hello again to my favorite support group,

I'm Vixen and I'm an Icewindaleoholic,

I'm currently in Upper Dorn's Deep section of the game and have entered the cavern for the first time.
After gaming for the day, I saved. When I try to load a saved game I keep getting this error message:
"Assertaion failed in ChDimm.cpp at line 792"
I checked the trouble shooting page and followed the known fixes
a) clean cd rom player and cd of any debris (there wasn't any and all other cd's work fine but I did it anyway)
b) delete cache\data file and see if the game will reload the missing file (apparently it didn't)
c) Try using an older saved game ( I used one way back in chapter one and it came up with the same Assertaion error)

How can I get this to work? Ideas? Suggestions? I've e-mailed support but so far (3 days later) all I've received is a form letter with the same information that's on the website that says " if this doesn't answer your question write us again." I did but I'm not holding my breath.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so....would ya, could ya share the fix with me?

Pouting in the corner cause my game won't work.
Vix

Make sure that you have the latest patch installed AND that you have installed them in the proper order. Installing an IWD patch after you have installed HOW or a HOW patch after you have installed TOL can cause exactly the problem you are seeing.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling if everything with the patches is in order.

Check out the BIS message boards. There have been a lot of assertion errors lately. Some are the result of bad cds! You might try copying the contents of each cd into a temp file on your hd. If a file fails to copy it's a sure sign that the cd is bad and it needs to be replaced.

Thanks Micah,

I don't have HOW installed just IWD. I downloaded patch 1.06, as far as I know it's the only for IWD. It was the only one available for download @ interplay's website.

If I uninstall and reinstall IWD, what file do I need to keep so I don't loose my game? Or am I dreaming here ...holding on to false hopes as I see my two months of hard gaming fizzling into the black whole called "my computer"?

Crossing fingers,
Vix

oh ya...and ummm on the chance of looking rather foolish.

uhhhmmmm where do I find the BIS board and what does BIS stand for? I've come up with quite a few acronym definitions but none of them terribly decent.

Blushing,
Vix

Here's the link to the Black Isle Icewind Dale troubleshooting forum

http://feedback.blackisle.com/forums/index.php?s=

You'll need to register if you want to post the problem there.

You should back up your saved games, any custom portraits that you might have been using, and the patch exec file.

It looks like you have the proper save, so that isn't the issue

Sorry, I could have been more precise ... the saved games are located in the mpsave folder. Each saved game is in its own sub-folder and you should probably copy that folder and all its contents into a temp file before you uninstall.

MICAH YOU ROCK!

Thanks for the advice. Between the BIS board and your suggestion I was able to get it working.

For anyone else who may run across the same problem here is the fix.

a) defrag your computer
b) save your mpsave folder to a temp file
c) uninstall IWD, (you will still have one file in program files that you will need to go back and delete manually.) DO THIS!
d) install IWD I went with the full install this time instead of recommended. It takes up more space but I'll delete it when I'm finished the game anyway.
e) transfer your saved mpsave file back into the game.
f) Go hunt some orc!

This particular assertaion error is a missed file on Disc 1. For some reason recommended download always missed that same file but full download caught it.

Hasta Luego,
Vixen
