I found out a nice combination that i think any class can use. Its the ring of free movement(the dungeon where bodhi sends you to find your way through the maze) and the boots of speed. You can still move fast with the boots but you'll be immune to all holding magics. Reply with other good combos.

Not quite. There is a bug in the code that permits you to wear both an item of free action and another of haste simultaneously, but they aren't supposed to work that way. If you don the free action item first then the haste one, the haste is cancelled. But if you don the haste item first then the free action one, you get both effects simultaneously. Like I said, a bug.

Actually, if you have downloaded the Baldurdash fixes for the Boots of Speed and Grandmaster Armor, it will work, and should. The Boots of Speed specifically say that they increase the movement rate, not haste the character. The Grandmaster Armor says it acts like the Boots of Speed. So, with the patches, DarkThief7's strategy will work.

As an expansion on that, wear (in this order) the Taralash +4/+5, Amulet of Cheetah Speed, the Boots of Speed, Grandmaster Armor +6, and the Ring of Free Action. That will quadruple your movement rate, then add 16 to it, and prevent you from being held or slowed. Fun fun fun.

In this case, I suspect the boots weren't bugged, and that screen text was wrong.

But why then would the effect of the boots be negated when you don the ring first? That was not 'fixed' in ToB either...

It's true the Boots of Speed increase movement rate and not haste the character. Originally the boots did haste the character as per the spell and then removed the extra attack per round. This stuffed up hasting a character in other ways while wearing the boots though so Baldurdash made it alter the movement rate as the description says.

However the description for the Ring of Free Action states that the wearer is immune to everything, magical and otherwise, that affects mobility in any way. It only includes haste and slow as examples. Increased movement rate should be negated by a Ring of Free Action, so Baldurdash got it wrong, again.

I think Icewind Dale and BG1 has a much better description of the item:

Ring of free action: 'Edventar's Gift'
This ring was given to the reef scavenger and hunter known only as Edventar, by a group of aquatic elves long his friends. His help in routing the "Pirate Queen" of Dambrath was instrumental in their survival, though Yenandra continues to be feared anywhere the water meets land.

STATISTICS:

Special: The wearer is immune to everything, magical and otherwise, that effects mobility in any way, although can still be hasted. Be aware, however, this will also protect the wearer from beneficial effects such as those received from the boots of speed.
Not Usable By:

So, if the ring of free action prevents anything that affects mobility in any way, and the boots of speed affect movement rate (i.e. mobility), I'd say there's a pretty good chance that the effects from the boots of speed should be cancelled.
