Ya'll probably didn't even notice I was gone, but, then again, I was only down for 1.5 days. Turns out someone decided to screw with my PC and removed all the files necessary to start windows so when I restarted my computer, I got this nice little "we are sorry for the inconvience..." error message. Anyways the problem turns out to be that I put in my virus protection, but forgot to activate the firewall that came with it. Problem fixed and now I'm back. Now I just gotta check my computer for the spyware that Logitech and friends stuck in with their drivers.

Hearing stories like yours makes me very angry, as this happened to me not long ago. What sick pleasure do these hackers get by ruining our computers. BAH!

firewalls are good and will stop a lazy lamer, but they are nothing to a determined hacker.

On dialup, use something like zone alarm or the sygate firewall.
On broadband, you might get away with the software ones but a hardware firewall is the best option.

I use Zone Alarm Pro, I like the approach it uses to isolate ports and software from the internet but lately I've been having stability problems with it. I've been seriously considering getting a router with a h/w firewall.
