In parts of Europe, Alexander the great is thought of as a national hero and yet he carried out genocide against the macramé people IIRC, to name but one. The thing is, it’s easier to have dead heroes than live ones. A dead person is a known quantity in that they are not likely to do much to change their status in your eyes (unless of course of course new stuff emerges or something) Take King Offa of Mercia, He’s been dead about a thousand years, and mostly we don’t know much about him, except for him uniting mercia probably and building offa’s dike to defend against the welsh. What a hero! |
