Prices are waaaaaaaaaayyyyyy down on most parts and I'm gonna take advantage of it! After selling my old system to my neighbor, the whole thing should only cost a little over $330! Here's what I'll have!

AMD Athalon 1.2 Ghz
Basic standard stuff- 56k Modem, 10/100 ethernet, USB, etc.
256 Mb Ram
40-60 Gb Hdd (I havn't got a buy nailed down on this one yet)
20" monitor
12x/32x DVD player with hardware based DVD decoder
4xCDRW/8xCDR/32X CD-RW drive
500 watt speaker system

I WILL HAVE THE AWESOME ABILITY TO COPY DVDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am excited and doing the happy dance!!!

Copy DVD's? Which format? Are you sure that's what you are getting? The cheapest DVDR's I've seen are around 350-400 dollars. There are some DVD/CDR/CDRW drives out there, but don't think they will burn DVD's. Even among DVDR's many of them are cartridge based and of a different format then the dvd's you play in your home dvd player. The way you wrote it, 12x/32x DVD doesn't necessarily mean those are write speeds. It probably means that you have a 12x DVD and a 32x CD read speed.

Also, I'd strongly recomend getting the Athlon XP series. The Palomino chip is significantly faster then the Thunderbird. As far as HD's go, Western Digital just came out with a 160 gig, 7200 rpm, ATA 100 drive for 299 which is a hell of a deal. Have fun!!

ehhhh you can still sort of copy DVDs...You just have to rip them and then decode them and then reencode them with a program like Flask, then make SVCDs. takes three or 4 cds for one dvd, and most dvd players will play them. You can lower the resolution and get a movie on 2 Cds, but why not go for laserdisk quality? The big downside is that it takes FOREVER to encode them, plus each ripped dvd takes up 3-8 gigs.

No fair! That's better than what I have! I've only got a measly 950 Mhz Athlon, 128 Megabytes of Ram, got about the same space HDD. Aaaaaargh! You've got a bigger monitor than me! Damnit! I NEED a bigger monitor for when I play movies on my computer, sure you don't want my 16" monitor and then you can send me your nice 20" one? Ah ha! I manage to beat you in the sound area, FEAR the power of Surround Sound! Mwahahaha!
