i started to play with a monk just to try him,so far so good maybe he isnt a tank but has his uses but...i tottaly disagree with his weapons profs:
1.IS it possibly soo many years in a monastery not to be able to be at least specialized with a weapon? (i think should be master but not be greedy!)
2.Its very stupid to have a monk and to cannot use decently traditional "monk-ish" weapons like quartestuffs or katana.

I don't disagree with the monk's proficiencies. The traditional monk weapon is, well, his fists. They're supposed to spend their years meditating to turn their body into a weapon or somesuch. Anyway, it all works out for the better; they attack many times per round and score around 15 damage per hit.

I agree whit Armisael. I have now a level 8 monk and his fists are really deadly and his AC is now a -2 and how about when my monk is level 21.

PS: monks can use katanas in bg 2 at least my
monk can.

Monk absolutely RULE BABY, YEAH!!!!!

I can image playing a monk from lvl 1 up would be trying but from 7th level on they kick rump! I just made level 14, my fists are +2 magical weapons, I'm immune to poison, charm spells and more. Check out your kit description it's truly awesome. If I'm not mistaken, at level 20 you are completely immune to non-magical weapons.
Don't use a weapon unless you absolutely have to, i.e. need a +2 weapon or better to hit and your character isn't high enough level for plus +2 fists. I have a +3 Katana and a +2 sling, but I always use fists, even if I might do more damage with something else (doubtful).
I chose single weapon style as one of my profs to gain a bonus to AC when I use weapon, but I never use a weapon for that bonus, only for the reason listed above. When u fight something that needs a better "+" to hit hit than your fists' provide, you need all the help you can get

Monk absolutely RULE BABY, YEAH!!!!! (oops, I said that already, huh?)

Hello.

I just finished the game with my Monk, he is really nice man i can tell.
He killed Firkarg and the dragon in temple ruins with just one deadly blow, hehe,
quiverly palm just kicks ass! So, you have to give the monk-class a try, he
becomes a really good fighter when he is in level 14+, + high magic resistance,
at level 21 monk gets 63% without any items, and with two +3 fists which do a damage
of 20-30 each(20 strength and gauntles of crushing), and +4 in movement at level 21, etc.
Ok, there may be one disavantage, low hitpoints, but just take a look of these advantages,
My opinion: Monk rules!!!!

I just started a game using a monk. I've been playing as a Kensai, so I have gotten used to not having armor. Even in his basic form, I started with an AC of 2, not bad for a naked starting character. And his fists are good even at the beginning, every punch I land has always been 11 to 15 damage. He already matches Minsc's beginning damage potential with a standard 2 handed sword, and he hits more often. I am definately intrigued.

well sorry for the late replay i was out of p.c.! ...
my monk is level14 so i know all his advantages and i have to say 2 things:
1)i have found a weapon much better from its fists! its the scarlet-ninja to usable only by monks! it is a +3 weapon and it gives 1 extra attack per round! and poison target if it fails its save!!! so with the single weapon prof. i have the -4 ac and 9/2 attacks from level 14!
2)i didnt say that he cant use katanas/quarterstuffs etc etc but he cant be specialised in these and that is damn shame cause they are monk-ish weapons. (a monk can specialize in long sword, how in the 9 hells he found long swords in japan/wherever he came from??!!)

I don't know about all those other weapons... But I would have thought that if a monk was going to practice with a weapon that the quarterstaff would be the first. When ever I picture a monk. Be it from Asia or old Europe. I always picture him with a quarterstaff.

Actually, monks from ShaoLin temples in China they practise all sort of weapons(spear, scimitar,
sword, etc), especially quartestaffs of cource, but i think most of them prefer unarmed combat style.
I am not sure there are many monks in Japan, there are mostly ninjas and samurais I think.

At level 15 (I believe) the monk's fists become a +3 weapon unto themselves.
