A wild surge happens when a Wild Mage's magic goes...well...wild. I think it's something like a 5% chance or something like that each time you cast a spell that there is a completely random spell effect - this could be that your mage is healed, or a fireball explodes on everyone, or the room is overrun with squirrels - it's completely random and unpredictable if/when it happens.

A Wild Mage is basically the same as a regular mage, except they have access to a few new spells only for Wild Mages - these spells are usually to aid/protect themselves from their own wild magic or other's wild magic. Also, the Wild Surge could quite easily work towards your benefit.

also the first lvl wild mage spell _ Nahals reckless dweomer lets you do a wild surge on purpose. You can choose any spell in your book to try to cast and then -poof you add your lvl to the d100 roll to determine results. Spells like chaos sheild also add to your roll, increasing the chance of a favorable response. It's loads of fun, and it feels quite good if your successfull and pull a time stop or another high lvl spell out of your ass!!!

That's really funny. It took me a minute to catch on, sadly enough.

Wild mages have the advantage of gaining an extra spell per level for being a specialist mage, but they have no opposition school so can write all magics. ALso, if you want to see what all the effects do, ensure debug mode is on in the baldurs gate ini file, and you can specify the wild surge number for every time a spell is cast. CRTL+H lets you set it anywhere between o (disabled) and 100. Not that when this is set, ALL spellcasters in your party (even priests) will wild surge, but some of the things are quite cool.
