I've read posts here about training skills in the guilds at each level-up. My characters are level 7 now and I've only done this a couple times. The costs are very high. I barely have had enough money to have everyone pay the entrance fees for their guilds, for a couple to have role ascensions, and for a few training points. Now that my characters have sword skills of around 5 and spell school skills of around 4, the cost for training a point is 3000 to 7000. And now if I want my priests and wizards to get level 7 spells before changing roles it's going to take a great many more levels at this rate. So that you know where I am in the game, I'm just starting the serpent temple.

So I'm wondering how you all get this much money selling rusty swords for 10 gp apiece. I read about the money cheats in the game but that can't be what the developers had in mind when they designed it so there must be something I'm missing. Am I in a position now where I should consider restarting the game since I'll probably never get level 6 and 7 spells at this rate?

You are quite right. It is virtually impossible to train all of the characters each time they ascend a level. Especially in the early stages of the game, and especially if one has 6 party members (which I have always had). Take with you and sell everything you can get hold of during your adventures and concentrate on training your spellcasters for now.

While it is excellent advice to train whenever you can that isn't easy when you don't have the gold. There are numerous tips in the BEST TIPS thread on how to make more gold.

One nice option, if you are not that far along in the game, is to reset your adventures and start over with the same party. Resetting the adventures will remove quest items, but your characters will be whatever class they are now and have lots of their goodies. The advantage of doing this is that redoing the first part of the game is considerably easier increasing one's ability to raise gold and take advantage of guild training. Really won't take all that long to get back to where you are now in the game with some really nice advancements.

Another good hint, until you are able to identify items yourself, is to put all similar items into the inventory of one character. When one item in that person's inventory is identified, all items that match it are also identified which can save lots of $$$.

The real moneymaker comes about when you learn fletchery. You can start making your own arrows, and I can tell you that a nicely enchanted Dragon Arrow sells for about 90,000 GP Just takes a few hours of adventuring, and you're sitting in the money.

Of course, that money flies quickly when you're training in 12th-level skills (around 130,000 each), or doing those high-level enchantments (around 2 million GP). But hey, that's what fletchery is for [img]smile.gif[/img]

[edit] Forgot to add: Fletchery is part of the game, so it's not a cheat like the inn cheat, or a cheese like Arbitrage is. So fletch away, and don't worry about going to confession. [/edit]

Another possible money maker, available from very beginning of the game, is the Ring of Mariin. Even without the Merchant trait, you will sell it for 5000 gp and buy it for about 1500 gp.
Therefore, collect the rings and do not sell them. Next game run, you can generate money by them. This should work in a patched game, too. If you are patched then check it at the nearest possibility.
Notes: Only a mage or a warlock can use the ring. Therefore, only a warlock or a mage can buy the ring back from a shop.
