I'm currently a lvl 15 chaotic good fighter and I'm shortly into the luskan host tower, and ive been using sword saint katana +1 and a shield for most of my time playing. I've recently starting using the blade of the gladiator. I have weapon focus, specialization and improved critical in both these types of weapons, im wondering is it worth focusing at all on greatsword now? Are there any really good greatswords that u cant miss out on?

I started as a Paladin and got herded by the game recommendations into using a Greatsword the first time. As a human Paladin, I had a high enough constitution and AC to not need a shield and liked the big damage hits, but then I played as an elf. The Elf needed the shield since heavy armor killed any dex bonus and he had a –2 to constitution to start out in life with...
I did not make it too far into Chapter 2 with either character, but I did find that the Inn Keeper at Green Dragon Inn sells the Chaos Dagger (+2 regen). My current 13th lvl Wizard has not found any great Greatswords, but has found plenty of great armor… so if it is working for you, I would not worry about Greatswords and turn towards feats like Knockdown or boost your saving throws like Will and Reflex. |

the game tailors the magic items you recieve towards the ones you're proficient with/use more... I'm a great-axe person so i can't tell you whether there are any good greatswords, but there are some nice axes.
also if you put points into parry you don't need the dex bonuses to AC, parry will block the attacks and if you get improved parry you'll be doing even better.

If you have specialized in one handed sword like long sword or katana
just stay with that. The benifit of a shield is huge. Especialy a nice shield with DR or something.

Just wait until you get the Protector shield dude..... Soak 5 damage, yeah baby! I think you should stick with Katanas and Longswords, since you have souped both up. There are many good Katanas and Longswords, but not many good Greatswords. Trust me.

And lets not forget bastard swords - especially Bloodletter and Dragonslayer

I always liked big and heavy hitters. But at the same time I didn't feel too attached to great axes and whatever else, but instead always liked 2H sword. And so in NWN too, my fighter went with Greatswords and is specialized to the max with it. And I don't regret it. He does great damage and also has very good skills in Parry. In fact, Parry is probably highest "specialized" skill he has He also has Improved Disarm and Greatsword here is especially good, due to being large weapon and thus having a bonus while disarming.
With easier foes the fights are over pretty fast (well, at lvl 20 anyway), as the damage done is quite big. With harder mobs - into Parry mode and disarm as needed - and the fights become mainly a fun to watch show, how the "big and bad" enemies try to hit my warrior, and get smacked flat while doing so. And my packs gets slowly filled up with their weapons, what I got while disarming them. Good additional cash income But I guess it depends on the race, i.e. smaller race with less HP does need more armor. My fighter is human, with good DEX and Dragon Armor (well, the chain version) and his AC is well over 30. Frankly I played through the game 2 times, each time with a fighter, until I had it all "figured" out what I want to see in a fighter, and made this 3rd one, whom I enjoy

I tend to use a simpler strategy - charge in and start hitting With specialisation in longswords/katanas & bastard swords soon to be added to the list, my Ranger/Fighter/Rogue just changes weapons depending on the type of enemy. The undead get a double dose of Blessing of the Daystar, etc. Recently tried out Bloodletter & Dragonslayer on Klauth - cue one dead beastie in fairly short order!
Personally, I tend to stick to the passive skills e.g. I have never used disarm or parry as I find I am blocking enough hits without them and I can't be bothered pausing during melee to activate them. Still, one of the nice things about this game is that it can be played a variety of ways.
