If you talk to the boys in Umar Hills (They are north of the Cowled Wizard's house) then they will ask you to buy them 3 bastard swords and some Ale. That's the ale you're supposed to buy them

Giving the boys the weapons and the booze makes them go off and try to be adventurers, the boys are not the smartest kids in the village. They get in over their heads in the cave with the mimic and you get to go bail them out. After you save their underage behinds you get chewed good out by the boy’s parents for contributing to the delinquency of minors.
Worse if you are a ranger you also loose the stronghold.

I was not a Ranger but had the all strongholds patch. I got chewed for buying them the swords (can't remember if I gave them ale or not) and I went and saved them. The stronghold remained. I got to do the end-quest after this event.

And, yes, you *can* lose strongholds with the all strongholds patch.

I think that they're still there, because that quest doesn't have anything to do with the main Umar hills quest.
