I realized ogres were dead when I encountered the shadow lord and I looted the armor and shield. Strange.

Well, they're 'good' ogres, apparently. They're in the Umar hills map, just north of the township. The shield's pretty crappy (medium shield +2, 'shield of the lost', 5% magic resistance). The mayor of the township may give you a reward for settling things with them.
