I never started smoking. However when I was 18 I started playing in Clubs and inhaled mountains of tobacco smoke "passively" ending up with a mild passive addiction.

Like a smoker I "get the urge" and am often tempted to buy a pack and start smoking full on.

Then I remember I value my voice, and that my paternal grandfather died of smoking related cancer.

I was given my first, and last, cigarette at the age of 5. Somebody told my Mother and she beat the crap out of me. I was never tempted to take up smoking ddespite the peer pressure. I caught my sister smoking when she was 11, I grassed her up and she got the beating.

My Mother gave up smoking about 7 years ago after smoking for fifty years but the damage was done and now she has chronic obstructive airways disease and can't walk more than a few yards.

My brother and I 'practised' smoking my dad's 'nub ends' (dog ends, buts) when he was about 10/11 and me 3yrs younger. And there was no such thing as a filter or low tar, either. They made me feel SO ill I was sure I would never try again. However, when I was 18,I was in a job where all the other staff smoked, and I felt 'the odd one out'. So I would buy packs of 5 and practise smoking on the bus on the way to work. 'O course, everyone inhaled then, so I had to learn as well. When I was sure I could do it without either coughing or feeling faint, I proudly lit up at work.
I gave it up at age 28 and have never smoked since.

Most of my friends smoke, and it seems like most of our social life takes place in pubs. A couple of years ago I was offered a cigarette while we were out drinking - and I took it. I am now hooked, although I never feel the need to smoke when I am not in the pub, in fact unless I have had a few drinks the thought of smoking disgusts me!
But then I am out, all my friends are smoking and I start twitching for a cigarette.
Yes, I feel shame. Now I have admitted it, I am going to quit.

I'm what they call a smoker-on-occasion. I only smoke now and then when the occassion (parties, vacation etc.) tells me there's need for a cigaret. Never else. I started it a year or two ago.

His name?

I had the same problem. Alot of my friends smoked and a huge portion of our social life takes place at parties, bars, clubs, etc... Everytime I drank, I NEEDED a cigarette. My addiction completely carried over to my regular life. I became a full on smoker.

Believe me, quit now while it's not that bad. It only gets harder.

My dad smoked heavily - became a 40 a day man - from the age of 13 to the age of 45. Then he stopped. Improvement in health and skin was remarkable - he actually LOST a lot of the wrinkles he had developed; not round the eyes and forehead, but on his cheeks and round his mouth. Even at age 80 he still had skin like a baby's.

I started smoking when I was 14. Bought my first pack when I was 15. I love to smoke. I know it seriously damages my body and all that (how can a smoker not know?) and to be perfectly honest I don't care. It brings me great pleasure for the time being. I'll deal with the consequences later.
