I found leadership useless, although gallantry and prowess did seem to have a positive effect. To echo what everyone else has been saying, pay the most attention to the skills near the end of your list. Once they scroll off, you can't get them back (without editing, that is).
I only apply skill points to things I can't train in at the guilds. And I don't buy any skills I don't need yet. A common mistake is to buy all your weapons skills, in case you run into a certain special weapon. Don't worry about it -- stick with sword and staff, and forget the rest. Get them later when you've gotten all your other skills up to high levels and can really kick some booty.
