The target do not necessary have to be non-hostile for backstabbing to work, but if the target is hostile, it just make is harder for you to hide in shadow. Hence, the invisibility potion works well in this situation. Or if you have speed increasing item (e.g. boots of speed), have you thief run into a corner where he/she will be out of sight of the enemy before the hostile catches up can hide into shadow.

If the target is hostile it's imperative that
A)You are hiting him squarely in the back, for some reason side attack result in no multiplier. b)You get one attack only, if it misses the ennmy sees you imeadiatly and can reat arrocdingly |
