Default Weird Virus Problem

Hey everybody, I'm hoping someone here can give me some advice on a virus warning that pops up every time I go to gamespy.com. I get a warning that : C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\cache4\opr1EN77 contains a virus from the Nutcracker family (I use the Avast free antivirus software). I move it to the chest and close the browser window.

This happens EVERY time I go to gamespy.com, but nowhere else. I find it hard to believe that somehow gamespy is trying to infect my computer but I know almost nothing about viruses - what is really going on? Last time this happened I ran a virus scan and it didn't find anything.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a false positive. If a scan reveals nothing, and other scanners do not alert you, then you can safely say it is. Well known sites like gamespy or ebay or yahoo etc. obviously don't maliciously infect you, so i'd guess its avast. I use AVG free and sometimes panda, haven't had a virus in a long time.

Do you use multiple browsers? Try Gamespy with FF or IE and see what happens.

Can you post the link here, so I can go there and see what Norton says?

I just tried it with IE and got the same virus message that in the following folder: Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\GTE7CDAZ\bg-tab-lft-0[1].gif there is a virus.

The link I go to is www.gamespy.com, nothing special or out of the ordinary.

A false-positive then. Clean out your temp folders, hit "ignore" the next time it happens and keep on going.

I use Avast and get the same Virus warning from that gamespy site.

Maybe send gamespy an email asking what is up with that?

There's some mention in the Avast forums of this problem. General agreement is it's a false positive.

Perhaps drop Avast an email advising them of the warning you've been getting just to confirm.

Just went to Gamespy with Avast, did not get any warning. Maybe it's actually one of the regional IGN sites which has a suspicious file? (I automatically get redirected to the british site)
