"What I'm doing here, eh?" Milanthir's smile grows, if anything, wider. "Well, I wasn't quite aware that elves were such a rarity around here - we aren't traveling folk, but we ain't 'tirely stagnant - I'm particularly prone to travelin', being an adventurer of sorts. I've been wanderin' fer many a year now, just lookin' fer magic to supplement my own verrah poor knowledge of the Art. Your friend here's been tellin' me about the mage 'o this city, and I was thinkin' of spendin 'im a little visit, what?"
All this is, as is Milanthir's wont, spoken in a far less erudite dialect than one might expect from either an elf or a wizard, emulating the speech patterns of less patient adventurers he's met.

And what's the best way to get people to go away? Indeed, to make them uncomfortable.

"'Anyhow, if ye would care te follow me, I'm plannin' on headin' ter see the village mage, if I can find 'im. Would ye have any idea wherabouts he'd be at this point in time?"

Before either Sam or Karl could answer, James pipes in from the side, where he was still guarding his door.

"Hey elf...why are you talking funny?"

Karl and Sam realized that the elf's wording had changed a tad, but dismissed it at first since they had only heard him speak one sentence prior. However, they both knew that James had been standing there talking to him a bit longer and would have caught the change in accent moreso. They turned back to the elf.

"Indeed, I think that we should go find Oley immediately..."

As he talks, both guards decide to arm themselves, Sam with his crossbow and Karl with his blade.

"...and find out what he has to say about you. You're the only other magic user in town and we've been looking for just such a person. I am betting that only Oley would be able to discern your true intent in this town, so its in your best interest to come with us if you have nothing to hide. Refusal to surrender will be taken as guilt. Will you willingly come with us?"

Of course, people that were on this side of town could not visually see the commotion at the Inn, so they began to gather around and watched as Karl and Sam confronted an elf. They had their weapons out!

If news TV had been invented back then, surely this would be the kind of breaking news that always interrupts one's favorite TV show...

"Sounds good. I could use an escort - Let's go." Milanthir continues smiling, and motions for the guards to lead the way.

Sam had wondered how they'd find Oley, but Karl knew where to expect him to be. He and Sever had transported by Oley's magic into the tavern not too long ago, and Karl had left Sever there to wait on the Mage's arrival. There was a good bet that Oley had already gone to the tavern by now and was sitting there taking advantage of Sever's heroism to rack up on some drinks for himself.

They walked without an argument towards the tavern, but as they came into view they noticed a crowd of people gathered outside watching something in the direction of the Inn. Karl could not quite make out what, but it could not be good. However, they had an elf in custody and could not dispatch to investigate the disturbance until they turned the elf over to Oley for questioning. Then, maybe one of them would head that way and see what was going on.

The closer they came to the tavern and its neighboring Inn, the more interested Karl was in the commotion. But he had to get rid of this elf first.

He did not even have to go into the tavern. There, standing in the street and watching the commotion at the Inn from afar was Oley the mage. They walked up to the mage and introduced their problem.

Karl: "Mr. Oley...we have taken this elf into custody as a personage of interest. He claims to know magic, and has already tried deceiving us. We were wondering if you could give him a lookover and tell us if he had anything to do with the arson this morning or the jailbreak that surely you've learned about by now."

While Karl thus spoke, it was Sam that had been staring at the spectacle across the street, and noticed Kasimno.

Sam: "Hey...what's Kasimno doing over there with a sword? Is he causing some kind of trouble?"

Oley, vaporizing enemies since 1053

Oley stood watching the trio with vague disinterest, spinning the crystal with one hand and sipping from his flask with the other. He glanced at Karl then at Sam as they spoke in turns. "Kasimno is on business that I have assigned to him, if you have a problem with it, we can talk later." He paused eyeing Sam for a moment or two, "I've been needing new furniture."
Looking back at Milanthir he stopped twirling the crystal, letting it come to a rest gradually, "*Hold your hands palms upward, and out towards me,*" He then began chanting and the crystal began to glow gently rocking, and building up speed.

Pandaros

Pandaros looked at the interested crowd and sighed.

"I suppose now we have an army," he muttered to himself. He then turned to Kasimno. "I don't suppose you can convince them to leave?" Pandaros cast a quick glance around at the growing number of villagers. "Probably not."

He then noticed the guards escorting a mage to Oley and pressed the palms of his hands against his eyes in frustration. When he removed his hands and looked again he swore softly to himself. "This is getting out of control." He turned once more to face Kasimno.

"We need to convince the guard to stay out here and restrain the mob. Then the two of us can follow Sever inside. The last thing we need is a desperate mage let loose on a bunch of skittish townsfolk, which is what we'll get if the guy in the inn gets loose, or worse, if these people charge inside. If you have any sway with these two guardsmen, please use it now to keep the people out here and away from danger."

Pandaros cast one last glance around the crowd and thought to himself, "at least if things go bad, there'll be someone to cover our escape."

Sever

As Sever stood up after a reasuring peek into the inn, he noticed the sounds of a small crowd beginning to gather a short distance away. He almost couldn't bring himself to look.

Several townsfolk had gathered and were gawking quite unashamedly in the trio's direction. A little further back, the guard, Karl, that was earlier Sever's escort and another were marching an elf, the very one he'd seen earlier, over to where Oley was standing. All sorts of alarm bells were ringing in Sever's head. This was a situation out of his control and one that could very easily lose the element of surprise in taking down the fugitives.

The inn, at a glance, had not been totally taken over by the fugitives as Sever had feared. But he wasn't entirely comfortable in the three of them entering just yet. Then again, he was a whole lot uncomfortable with a crowd of onlookers gawking in their direction. There seemed no other choice for the moment.

Sever caught the eyes of Kasimno and Pandaros and, with a pointed flick of his head, motioned for them to follow him into the inn.

After making a customary, brief inspection of the door, Sever opened it and thought to himself:

"I hope this old drunkard mage has still got the smarts to disperse a crowd. Sharpish."

Oley, After I sucker punched hour-glass eyes I took his lunch money and sent him crying to his brother

Oley began a low rythmic chanting in a gutteral language not unlike that of magic, or the language of Wyrms, subtly altering the spell effect that was on th crystal so that it would detect upon Milanthir any residue of the fire or any involvement in Vindsons shop, it would also as a side effect reveal if he had cast any dweomers recently. As the spell neared it's apex Oley glanced up from the crystal to reply to the elf.

BOOOOOOOM

The crystal disintegrated as errant magic surged through it causing a deafening explosion that shook the ground, knocked people over, and covered those nearest Oley with crystal powder black soot, and sulphuric smoke. Oley breathed out a large yellowish smoke ring then fell backwards, eyes open wide, smoke still rising from his beard and clothes.

"*I take it that isn't a normal side effect of that spell.*" Milanthir coughs, trying not to breathe in any of the mess. Slightly louder, he speaks: "I'm not sure what kind of reaction that was, but it's likely that smoke isn't good to breathe."

He mutters under his breath momentarily, then speaks to Karl: "If you wish, I can try to clear this up - that is, if it's responsive to a standard dispelling charm."
