It's easy to target people I think cos when you find a file it tells you which user has it. But all the scare tactics about "your IP is visible - we know who you are!" etc. are stupid and pointless. OF COURSE your IP is visible to everyone - it's how the Internet Protocol works, it needs to know where to address packets otherwise you wouldn't be able to view any web content. The only way to get around this is to access the web through a Proxy Server.
Anyway even if they find your IP, they have to go to the IP address distribution body who will tell them which company has the group of IPs your address is in. Then they would have to get your name from your Internet Service Provider. However ISPs are not allowed to give out personal data unless it's the police requesting it - so anyone trying to find you specifically will have to get a court order for the ISP to release your name. Anyway that's how I think it works. So basically this is just scare tactics - they're not gonna get court orders on for individual IP addresses to be identified. The case with the 4 students was only because such a huge number of songs were made available and it was on the university network. All the RIAA had to do was contact the university and the university had the student's names.

So because people can't help stealing songs, and can't stop distributing kiddie porn, the censor-free anonymous internet may soon be a thing of the past. A few rotten eggs spoil the whole bunch. Kind of like society. We wouldn't need laws if everyone was honest. |

the statement below is from the artical:
"Media analysts say up to 61 million Americans use Internet services such as Kazaa to download copyright material. Such downloads are blamed in part for a 20 percent drop in sales of CDs and DVDs from 2001 to 2002." Take A real good look at the music put out from the year 2000 up to today in 2003,60% of the music recorded in that time period sucked or was just a remake of older music. The way I see the music industry of today is, it sucks. Yes some of the music put out during that time was really good but the rest wasn't worth pissing on let alone going out and buying! so rather than going out and finding new Tallent they just go after the internet. The music industry needs to wake up and smell the roses their industry is going into the dumper they charge to much for the crap thats out their now and its isn't worth even 1/2 of what they charge so now everyone is trading music on the internet that is played for free over the radio. The Key word here is trading not selling there is no law that says you can't trade music with someone else for free the music industry tried to stop the sale of cassette recorders in the 70's because people could copy music from their friends for free and they lost that fight just like they are loosing this fight. Greed is an awful thing. [ 04-30-2003, 08:10 PM: Message edited by: TheCrimsomBlade ]

My prediction is that CD sales keep dropping as long as nothing is done to p2p networks. Why just napster, why not the rest? They have the same idea. Eventually this will force bands and artists to tour more to keep living.. not good. But hey, isn´t most of the money nowadays coming from touring anyway..

Yea, I'd really like to see them try and get that off the ground. The goverment has been trying to pass laws about this for some time, but can't because everyone's against it. The law states for every piece of illegal software (including programs obtained through Kazaa) you have to pay a $50 fine for each one. For some people, it's lible to make them go broke. But seriously, how could they target someone? If you have your files backed on another hard-drive, they out of luck.
