About bonus combat feats they're same right?
I like to have an animal companion. So what's the ideal WIS for that?

Ranger better than a fighter? I wouldn't go with that opinion unless I caveated multi-classing with a rogue. As a Ranger/Rogue charater, I found that the various magical leather & studded leather armours were enough when mixed in with some of those fireball scrolls, wands, etc I could use in my "use magic item" skill area.

As a straight ranger, I found myself getting chopped to bits when rushed becaues I couldn't soften up my enemies enough before I got overwhelmed.

Caveat: I play at the Hardcore Rules setting. That means I can't do things like call miracle fireballs that don't hit my party members...

Ok, let me take the Ranger class one step further. I thought I was enjoying the class as a Ranger/Thief combo, but try this one on for size. I just raised a level and decided for the hell of it I would add Sorceror to the mix. I now have an 8/3/1 Ranger/Thief/Sorceror mix. The Sorceror gets an animal companion at 1st level. My Ranger has had one since 6th level and the thief can pick locks (which you can find items in the game to help this). So, what I did (for the hell of it) was to bring in an imp (Sorceror), bring in my panther (Ranger), and also used a spell of Monster Summoning VI (which was now available because my character is a Sorceror mix). So, there's me, the Panther, the Imp, and a huge a** spider. LOL. I believe that I can get one more creature if I cast Monster Summoning via either Sorceror, or Wizard, but haven't actually tried that. So I have 3 companions with me. I'm not an uber character as some combos go, but I can use strategy with 3 other party members (and not actually have a party). LOL. I think 4 if I cast the spell (wasn't able to verify this before I left this morning though - I tried using the scroll and a wand and forgot this is similar magic - I brought in a badger with a scroll and then used the wand of lesser summoning and this got rid of the badger). Will update once I find out. Since my Thief and Sorceror are only 2 levels apart, I don't think I have the 20% penalty to XP too. I was in a combat with the Imp & Panther where you do the Judge thing against the Slaads, mummys, Curst Rangers, Ghasts, Ghouls, but did not notice any problems. They didn't seem to get killed too fast. I wish Bodak was still there so I could test out some more. This game just gets better and better. LOL

EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot to mention another reason I decided to add the Sorceror. The skills that the sorceror gets, complements the skills that the Ranger and the skills that the Thief gets. I now have access to almost all skills available in the game. And most of them are Class Skills so I get them at NO PENALTY (as long as I add them when leveling for that class). It's just too cool.

Actually you are getting the experience penalty, you'll need another level of sorceror to avoid. You get the penalty if the classes are 2 or more levels apart. Other than that it is a very good combo.

To answer the question I'd take fighter with a couple of levels of something else throwen in. That way you'll have a very self sufficient character with heaps of hitpoints and can wear any armor. Rogue works because it allows fighters to sneak attack and do even more damage, plus they can take the very handy 'use magic device' skill.

well I think I'll start as a fighter take a few levels of rogue so I'll have the use magic device ability. Then I can be able to cast monster summon and find familiar spell and enjoy with my 2 companion.

I am playing a wizard and i get killed so easily ( compartively) I've been killed 4 times so far and am only in Chapter 1 having just taken out 1 Waterhavian creature.
I have Linu the cleric to power through even level6 fighters. Am level 6 myself and finding fireball completely useless!!!!!!!!

Hmmm. Not sure if you can use a find familiar spell as that is more tuned towards mages. I think if you use find familiar from a scroll, it will dispell the monster summoning and vice-verse. That was the problem I had with the scroll and the wand. They were two similar magics. The game only allows one magic at a time for a similar type. So that is why I have my Panther (Ranger companion), Imp (Sorceror familiar), and Spider (Monster Summoning IV from scroll). When I use the wand of lesser monster summoning, the badger replaces the spider. I was going to try casting the spell as this is ANOTHER type of magic, but haven't had the chance yet. Will try it when I get home. I didn't realize I was being affected by loss of XP, but to tell you the truth, I'm kind of glad if it is happening. The game pushes you up in levels as it is. Not sure if I will let Sorceror go up anymore. I don't really need to do this. My Charisma is only 11 anyways, so my spell ability is EXTREMELY limited. It's cool that I can use almost any magic item though. Before I switched, I couldn't access Monster Summoning VI from a scroll, but I can now. I've been collecting scrolls for some time now and have quite a few. ) I have Tenser's Transformation, but that seems kinda redundant now. LOL

I have to agree with you there. I was fighting alongside a Monk on multi and they were able to fight stuff I couldn't. That + like effect they get when they level up means a great deal. Plus the AC bonuses. Jeez. They are killing machines at high level. I thought of running a Monk, but I have gotten used to the Ranger now. Might try one once he maxes out though. My main weakness so far is that I get knocked down a lot. Not sure what skill counters this (haven't read that deeply into the manual - LOL)

Screw all of you guys for making this game sound so cool when I don't have it yet! J/k. I like Mages, but I haven't played NWN yet, so i'll leave it at that.
