The Netherlands shares first place in the annual report on press freedom drawn up by the international journalists organisation Reporters without Borders. Top honours were also awarded to Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland.

Most of the new EU member states also did well in the report, as did some African democracies, including Namibia and Benin. North Korea and Iran are the countries with the least press freedom. In Europe, France dropped from 20th to 30th place due to police searches of several media outlets. The United States has fallen to the 44th place, mainly due to the recent cases eroding the right to protect an anonymous source.

The primary media sources have been conscripted by the political parties, and the secondary sources are labelled hacks and rumorers by the primary sources. It's shameful, and it's just another chapter in our decades-long story of voluntarily giving away our freedom.
