What's a good type of tennis racket that isn't overly expensive (nothing over $300 Canadian)? I intend to learn how to play tennis, and I figure a racket is a good place to start.

Wilson is a good make. But all brands have a range of rackets for beginner up to Pro. Just check a few out in the shop. Titanium rackets are nice and light but you don't want TOO light or else the racket bounces back off the ball somewhat.
Steel rackets are the cheapest but are heavy...at least they don't break. And in between titanium and steel, you have the carbon graphite rackets - they are a good weight, but can break....although only if you play very strongly.

I'd be classified as a super-beginner, I think. How much are the carbon graphite rackets, usually?

Try this:
http://tennis-extra.com/tennistreasuresjohn.html It's an autographed John McEnroe tennis racket for $70.00CDN. If anybody knows about quality rackets that can handle a little abuse, it's John.

I thought it seemed a little cheap for a McEnroe.

I suggest a Babolat racquet - and not heavier than 300 grams. They have some very good models weighting around 280 grams - try Zylon model.
You can check them at www.babolat.com.
