A syndicated radio program hosted by two Rednecks and broadcast from Charlotte, NC...home of our own Lord of Alcohol.

Most of their humor is "Southern"...kinda like Jeff Foxworthy. In their own way, they are a lot like Howard Stern...people either love 'em or hate 'em....there isn't much middle ground.

on a side note, i believe football is the greatest sports on earth. the most popular, the one played in most countries, the most simple and most complex at the same time, and the most exciting overall. the world cup must be the most exciting sports event in the world (even more than the olympics, imo).

or in the words of a popular commentator for espn at the start of a big game... "welcome to 90 minutes of the greatest sport on earth".

I wholeheartedly agree. Football is brilliant, and Artistry is what we normally call that which is judged subjectively.

If you run fast enough you win. = Sport.
You played that note/danced that step/skated that jump (subjectively) better than the next person = Artistic competition.

I don't believe non sporting artistry has a place in the Olympics. What next? A Guitar solo gold medal?

But then it's all about ratings isn't it. Rythmic gymnastics and Ice dancing are huge ratings winners aren't they?

Oh, and while I don't have an opinion on whether the Canadians should have won or not (I didn't see either routine) I objected to the U.S. media's use of north American opinion presented as 'proof' the Canadians should have won. Where were the Russian polls?

Interviewers would say things like "The whole world thinks this..."
Is the whole world North America to these journalists? I'm sure millions of Indians didn't care, and Slavics disagreed.

Ah well. It's all more important than a screwed health system, pollution, poverty and social injustice right?

Ronn_Bman, have you ever ice skated? The "art" is easy, compared to the amount of work needed to master the technical skills of jumps, turns, and spins, and footwork. It has been quoted that only 1 in 1000 skaters who have formal lessons, will *ever* learn to do a single rotation axel jump ( let alone a triple !! )

Pangur, I'm not a skater, but I am a musician, and I'll say that in music it's quite similar. The "art" is easy. It's the "technical stuff" that takes the years to master.

Well said. The ridiculous media attention for something as trivial as Figure Skating ticked me off as well.

Just for the record, the French judge admited that she was pressured into giving the Russians the gold!

Well, it's over and done with. I'm happy for both the Russian and Canadian teams. May they enjoy their medals in years to come. Unfortunately, though this will bring closure to the athletes, I have my doubt about this fixing any judging problems with the ISU. It's sad but true

In one of the "follow-up" stories on ESPN.com, reporter Jim Caple discusses that collusion among judges is common place. The article even goes so far as to suggest that the medals for the ice dancing competition (in which Russia is supposed to "repay" the French) has already been determined. For the sake of argument (and to see if he is right), here is how ESPN reports the medals are "supposed" to be awarded

Italy - Gold
Russia - Silver
France - Bronze

It will be interesting to see if it happens this way.

Well, it was close. The final results were:

France - Gold
Russia - Silver
Italy - Bronze

Of course, Canada actually had a shot at the bronze until they tumbled at the very end.

BTW, Ryanamur, in regards to "judging reforms", I heard last night that the ISU is considering completely changing the way competitions are judged. They are thinking of awarding specific points for each "trick". In other words...a triple-lutz would count more than a double-lutz, etc...and there would be specific point deductions for misses and falls.

We'll see what happens.
